The Afrikaans Art and Music Festival

The following blog post was written on the evening of the 11th July. Due to technological restrictions it was posted at a later date.

Our weekend in Bloemfontein coordinated with an Afrikaans Art and Music festival. People were selling a wide range of objects in their booths. Allison and I were walking through and there were some very persistent salesmen trying to sell us oil paintings they had made themselves, after finally getting away we were surprised to see the same paintings in other booths and we were glad we didn’t purchase the ones we saw from the first “artists.”

There were several people selling crocs…actually, it may have said “cruc” on the label because it was clear that the Croc Company was not benefiting from the counterfeit sales of the shoes. There were also several people selling dried meat products, included biltong.

The most interesting thing was the musical stage. From far away Allison said that it sounded like Jimmy Buffet. However, upon getting closer to the stage I started to pick out the words that were being sung in a sad sort of cowboy manner…. “Vindshied viper slap in time..” It was a very interesting, Afrikaans-cowboy version of a normally excellent Janis Joplin song done by two middle age men. I will try to upload the video, but the shaking camera due to my giggling must be overlooked..
