Mohale Dam

The following blog post was written on the evening of the 15th July. Due to technological restrictions it was posted at a later date.

Today we took drive out to the Mohale Dam, which is part of the Lesotho Highlands Water Authority project. To get to the dam we risked our lives, traveling on an incredibly rolling, steep on both sides, icy pass through the mountains (Eric, you would have LOVED it). It was a long series of switchbacks through some of the most beautiful scenery I’ve ever seen-probably some of the most beautiful in the world.

The dam is part of the project that has been created through a partnership between Lesotho and South Africa to help both countries. One of the assets that Lesotho has is water and it is something that South Africa needs. Therefore, the dam project has been created to provide South Africa with water (through a long underground tunnel) and Lesotho the energy provided by the hydroelectric plant associated with the dam and the money for the water they provide South Africa.

It has also provided Lesotho with a tourist opportunity, as the dam and the waterways created by it are absolutely beautiful. I would encourage anybody to visit this area, it will take your breath away it is so amazing. The pictures will not do it justice.

We were allowed the opportunity to drive over the top of the dam, walk into the dam, and then drive down the back side to the river below. The drive down and up were very steep and a little nerve wrecking, probably even more so for our fearless driver Patrick. It was a wonderful day trip for us all!
