The “darker” side of Bloemfontein

The following blog post was written on the evening of the 11th July. Due to technological restrictions it was posted at a later date.

Most of the outer edges of the city of Bloemfontein consist of Townships, which are incredibly poor areas of town. Although people are not longer forced to live in these areas based on race, the economic segregation that continues to exist is unimaginable. The large degree of economic and educational changes that were necessary following the end of apartheid never happened within many of the Township areas, and the people continue to live in the type of poverty that you may not associate with modern South Africa.

People live in shacks made of whatever they can find, often pieces of scrap metal. It is surprising that any government would allow people to live in such horrendous conditions. For my students, do you remember the pictures of the hoovervilles I showed you during our study of the Great Depression? Image mile after mile of that type of living condition-that is what the Township looked like.

It is incredibly sad that people still have to live like that right now. It is amazing that such a modern world can have so many people living in poverty.

By the way, these blogs have been interesting and I've been enjoying reading them!!
