KFC

The following blog post was written on the afternoon of the 30th July.

You cannot walk through a city without smelling KFC because as the smell from one restaurant starts to fade you smell the chicken from another. South Africans really seem to enjoy their KFC.

I hadn’t really thought about why there are so many KFC restaurants in South Africa until I mentioned something to Jill. She informed me that unlike most American restaurant chains (eg: McDonanlds), KFC never left South Africa when the sanctions against the apartheid government were established. It makes me a little uncomfortable knowing that companies like KFC profited from South Africans during the apartheid rule when others followed the sanctions that seemed to support Democracy. It is also frustrating knowing that ignoring the sanctions has allowed KFC to maintain a foothold in the South African fast food industry.

Therefore, I am not sure how I feel about a company like KFC getting the long term economic benefits associated with staying in South Africa during apartheid.

It should be noted that there are a large number of other fast food chicken options that are available for South Africans to enjoy.

Note that the Japanese auto companies that also stayed dominate the market in south Africa today. GM and Ford which left sold out to South Africnas dirt cheap and have never really recovered market share.

Looks like you're having a blast!
